Little Red Hat

This simple little hat is quick to make and you can make all kinds of color combinations for this. This pattern is sized for a newborn but can easily be made larger by just adding on more cast on stitches in multiples of eight.  Materials : One skein of bulky weight yarn (5). Size 9 circular needles in 12"inch and 24" inch or size 9 double pointed needles. Stitch marker, tapestry needle for weaving in ends of yarn and attaching pom-pom, and a pom-pom maker. Directions: Cast 48 stitches onto your doublepointed needles dividing the stitches evenly across needles, or cast on to your 12" circular needles, join to form a continuous circle and begin knitting in the round. Knit 9 rows. Row 10 is a decrease row, knit 6, knit 2 together all around. You should now have 42 stitches. Continue to knit every row until your hat measures 4 to 5 inches from beginning cast on row. Purl the next 2 rows then knit 3 rows. Start decrease rows for crown of hat as follows taking care to change to double pointed needles or longer circular needle using the "magic loop method" as stitches become inconvenient to work on the smaller circular needles:
Row 1: knit 5, knit 2 together all around. Row2 & 3: knit. Row 4: Knit 4, knit 2 together all around.
Row 5: Knit. Row 6: Knit 3, knit 2 together all around. Row 7: Knit. Row 8: Knit 2, knit 2 together all around. Row 9: Knit. Row 10: Knit 1, knit 2 together all around. Row 11: Knit.
Finishing: cut yarn leaving an 8"inch tail. Thread end of tail into a tapestry needle and run through all stitches left on needles and draw tight to pull opening closed. Weave in ends of tail and tie a knot.
Pom-Pom: Using a pom-pom maker (available at Jo Ann Fabric's) make a pom-pom following manufacturer's instructions and attach to top of hat. If you find any errors in this pattern please feel free to add a comment and I can fix any errors. Click on photo to enlarge image!
