Crocheted Buttons

I recently finished this little knitted sweater for my granddaughter and had a hard time finding buttons that I liked. So after giving it some thought, I remembered that I had seen a sweater with crocheted buttons. Aha! that was the solution to my button problem. After watching a few video's on "YouTube" and realizing that the crocheted buttons looked pretty easy, I attempted to make a sample button. Well I can say that it's very easy, and I was pleased with the outcome. I made the buttons on this sweater with variegated sock yarn and a size E crochet hook.

Here are my directions for
crocheted buttons:

Begin by chaining 3 stitches and making a slip stitch in the first chain.
Work 7 single crochets in the ring and join with a slip stitch at the beginning of the round.
Round 1: work a single crochet in each single crochet around.
Round 2: Work single crochet in first stitch, and work 2 single crochets in the next stitch, repeat this around.
Continue to repeat Round 2 as many times as needed to reach the circle size needed for your button.
Choose plain buttons, because they won't show anyway. The button will be placed on the wrong side of your work, and the beginning tail will be threaded through the hole of the button and pulled tight. Make sure you leave a 6 inch tail when your done crocheting, this tail will be threaded onto a needle and woven in and out around the outer perimeter of the circle and then pulled to draw up the circle and then the two tails, (beginning tail, and ending tail) will be tightly pulled and knotted together, pulling the circle over the button inside and making a nice little puffy button. The two tails will be threaded individually onto a needle and the needle will pierce through the area where button will be placed on the garment. Then tie both tails tightly together several times and knot off, and trim tail lengths to 1/8"inch.
Note: Do not make circle too large, it shouldn't be any larger than 1/4" bigger than your button.
